Bicycle used in Olympic Triathlon

If you are just starting out in triathlon, then any bike will do so long as it has two wheels and brakes that work! Even a mountain bike will do, but generally people will compete on traditional-style racing bikes with drop handlebars. Everyone has their favorite bike, and we'd love it if you would share your favorite with us and other readers simply by filling in the form below.

There are many things to consider when choosing a bike, from the type of riding you do to the distances you will cover. Other things to add into the mix for you to think about are gears, wheels, bars, pedals, shows, saddles and tyres. And then once you’ve decided on all that, you need to make sure you get a bike that fits. Once you’ve got your bike and are clocking up the miles, you need to then look after it. And it helps if you know what to do if something goes wrong with it. If you’re new to cycling or have a new bike in a different style, you’ll also need to get used to how it handles and get your technical skills up to scratch.

Triathlon Rules and Olympic Triathlon Fans

While specific rules for triathlon can vary depending on the governing body (e.g. USA Triathlon, ITU), as well as for an individual race venue, there are some basic universal rules. Traditionally, triathlon is an individual sport and each athlete is competing against the course and the clock for the best time. As such, athletes are not allowed to receive assistance from anyone else inside or outside the race, with the exception of race-sanctioned aid volunteers who distribute food and water on the course.
Triathlons are timed in five sequential sections: 1) from the start of the swim to the beginning of the first transition (swim time); 2) from the beginning of the first transition to the end of the first transition (T1 time); 3) from the start of the cycling to the end of the cycling leg (cycling time); 4) from the beginning of the second transition to the end of the second transition (T2 time); 5) and finally from the start of the run to the end of the run, at which time the triathlon is completed. Results are usually posted on official websites and will show for each triathlete his/her swim time; cycle time with transitions included; run time; and total time. Some races also post transition times separately.
Other rules of triathlon vary from race to race and generally involve descriptions of allowable equipment for example, wetsuits are allowed in USAT events in the swimming stage of some races when the water temperature is below 79 °F (26 °C), and prohibitions against interference between athletes. Additionally, the use of flippers or other swim propulsion and flotation aids are illegal in triathlon and can result in disqualification.
One important rule involving the cycle leg is that the competitor must be wearing their bike helmet before the competitor mounts the bike and must remain on until the competitor has dismounted; the competitor may remove their helmet at any time as long as they are not on the bicycle. Failure to comply with this rule will result in disqualification. Additionally, while on the bike course, all bicycles shall be propelled only by human force and human power. Other than pushing a bicycle, any propulsive action brought on by use of the hands is prohibited. Should a competitor's bike malfunction they can proceed with the race as long as they are doing so with their bicycle in tow.

Triathlon is a multi sport and most loved sport in Olympic Games. Majority of people love to watch it live. Sheila Taormina and Olympic Triathlon

Sheila Taormina was born on March 18, 1969 in Livonia, Michigan. She is an Olympic athlete from the United States, who has competed at 4 Olympics 1996–2008 and was the first woman to qualify for the Olympics in 3 different sports swimming, triathlon and modern pentathlon. At the 1996 Olympics, she earned a gold medal as a member of the USA's winning women's 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay team.
While swimming collegiately for the Georgia Bulldogs, Taormina earned a BBA in 1992 and an MBA in 1994 from the University of Georgia. She captained Georgia's 1991 team, won All America honors all four years of her collegiate career and won the Southeastern Conference 400 meter individual medley as senior.
She was the first UGA swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal and the first UGA athlete to make the Olympic team in multiple sports. Sheila handed her gold medal to her twin brother after becoming the Olympics champion, and he dropped it to the floor and some parts of it are rotten. Taormina competed at the first Olympic triathlon at the 2000 Summer Olympics. She took sixth place with a total time of 2:02:45.91. Her split times were 19:02.78 for the swim, 1:06:24.30 for the cycling, and 0:37:18.83 for the run. In 2004, Taormina won the ITU Triathlon World Championship title while residing in Clermont, Florida.

In the 2004 Summer Olympics, Taormina again competed in the triathlon. Her time was 2:09:21.08 as she finished in twenty third places. USA Triathlon and Triathlon at Olympics

USA Triathlon is the national governing body for the multisport disciplines of triathlon, du-athlon, aqu-athlon and winter triathlon in the United States. USA Triathlon is a member federation of the U.S. Olympic Committee and the International Triathlon Union. Its headquarters are in Colorado Springs, Colorado. USA Triathlon coordinates and sanctions grass-roots and elite multisport events across the country and works to create interest and participation in those programs. USA Triathlon’s 135,000-strong membership is composed of athletes of all ages, coaches, officials, parents and fans working to strengthen multisport.
On the elite level, USA Triathlon is responsible for the selection and training of teams to represent the United States in international competition, including the world championships, Pan American Games and Olympic Games. It conducts national camps and clinics and provides coaching education programs. On the developmental level, USA Triathlon fosters grass-roots expansion of the sport, which is facilitated by the sanctioning of age-group events and triathlon clubs. National and regional championships are held for triathletes from junior to senior age divisions. USA Triathlon's mission is to provide excellence in leadership, structure and education for the growth and development of the sport. USA Triathlon's vision is to set the standard of excellence as a world leader in the sport by promoting a healthy lifestyle and encouraging participation and achievement. Triathlon in the United States has its roots set firmly in Southern California. The early races were held in San Diego’s Mission Bay. It was only natural that the initial interest for a national governing body came from the same area.
In 1982, two independent groups were formed, both with the purpose of providing government for the rapidly developing sport. On Feb. 16, 1982, James Gayton and John Disterdick founded the U.S. Triathlon Association. On March 15, 1982, Jarold Johnson, Michael Gilmore and Penny Little founded the American Triathlon Association. On April 9, 1982, the two organizations held a joint meeting in Sacramento, Calif. The two existing organizations merged less than one unified national governing body called the U.S. Triathlon Association. By the end of 1982, USTA membership had reached approximately 1,500. In 1983, an insurance and risk-management coverage agreement was signed and USTA turned much of its attention to sanctioning events nationwide. In August 1983, the name of the organization was changed to Triathlon Federation USA. The organization quickly picked up a colloquial name by members and athletes nationwide Tri Fed. During 1984, Tri Fed sanctioned more than 1,000 events.
In June 1985, the first National Board of Governors meeting was held in Springfield, Ill., to chart the direction of the young sport and its younger national governing body. Clear goals and objectives were set forth in several areas: creating a uniform set of competitive rules, enforcing those rules, continuing to increase the number of sanctioned events, improving the federation's credibility as a voice for the sport, providing a clearinghouse for members’ questions on training and technical information, promoting event safety and sponsoring championships. On Nov. 1, 1986, Federation representatives met with the U. S. Olympic Committee in Dallas. In this meeting the USOC explained the minor changes needed in the Tri Fed bylaws before the Federation’s application to the USOC could be accepted. At the end of 1986, membership had grown to 5,589 annual members.
In 1987, Tri Fed mandated that any athlete competing in a sanctioned event had to obtain an annual membership. Membership skyrocketed to more than 34,000. This mandate only lasted one year because the Federation recognized the policy, although fiscally positive in the interim, was detrimental to the long-term growth of the sport because it discouraged the novice triathletes from competing. In 1988, Tri Fed planned a move to its current home of Colorado Springs, Colo., a move that was consistent with the long-term Olympic goal of the sport and the federation, as the USOC is based in Colorado Springs.

In 1989, the International Triathlon Union and the Triathlon World Championship at the Olympic distance of a 1.5K swim, 40K bike, 10K run was created. The Federation now had 24,729 members. Ironman Triathlon and Triathlon at Olympic

An Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) consisting of a (3.86 km)swim, a (180.25 km) bike and a marathon 42.195 kilometer run, raced in that order and without a break. Most Ironman events have a strict time limit of 17 hours to complete the race, where the Ironman race starts at 7:00 AM, the mandatory swim cut off for the (3.9 km) swim is 2 hours 20 minutes, the bike cut off time is 5:30 PM, and all finishers must complete their marathon by midnight.
The name Ironman Triathlon refers to both the original Ironman triathlon and the annual Ironman World Championship. Also called Ironman Hawaii, the world championships of the event, held annually in Hawaii since 1978 with an additional race in 1982 and are now preceded by a series of qualifying events. Ironman Triathlon became known for its grueling length, harsh race conditions, and television coverage.
The idea for the original Ironman Triathlon arose during the awards ceremony for the 1977 Oahu Perimeter Relay. Among the participants were numerous representatives of both the Mid-Pacific Road Runners and the Waikiki Swim Club, whose members had long been debating which athletes were more fit, runners or swimmers. On this occasion, U.S. Navy Commander John Collins pointed out that a recent article in Sports Illustrated magazine had declared that Eddy Merckx, the great Belgian cyclist, had the highest recorded "oxygen uptake" of any athlete ever measured, so perhaps cyclists were more fit than anyone. CDR Collins and his wife Judy Collins had taken part in the triathlons staged in 1974 and 1975 by the San Diego Track Club in and around Mission Bay, California, as well as the 1975 Optimist Sports Fiesta Triathlon in Coronado, California. A number of the other military athletes in attendance were also familiar with the San Diego races, so they understood the concept when Collins suggested that the debate should be settled through a race combining the three existing long distance competitions already on the island: the Waikiki Rough water Swim (3.86 km), the Around Oahu Bike Race (185.07 km) and the Honolulu Marathon 42.195 km.
There are 27 Ironman Triathlon races throughout the world that enable qualification for 2012 Ironman World Championships. Professional athletes qualify for the championship through a point ranking system, where points are earned based on their final placement in Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events. The top 50 male and top 30 female professionals in points qualify for the championship. Amateur athletes qualify for the championship by receiving slots allocated to each age group's top finishers in a qualifying event. Olympic Triathlon Tickets are easily available at Sport Ticket Exchange. Triathlon Organizations and Olympic Triathlon

Today, a number of triathlon events over varying distances are held around the world. The standard "Olympic Distance" of 1.5/40/10 km was created by long time triathlon race director Jim Curl in the mid-1980s, after he and partner Carl Thomas produced the U.S. Triathlon Series (USTS) between 1982 and 1997. The Hawaii Ironman Triathlon serves as the Ironman World Championship. The entity that owns the race, the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), hosts other triathlons around the world that also fall under the Ironman brand. Long distance multi-sport events organized by groups other than the WTC may not officially be called "Ironman" or "Iron" races. Such triathlons may be described as Full distance triathlon or "Half distance", but the "Ironman" and "Iron" labels are the official property of the WTC.
The International Triathlon Union (ITU) was founded in 1989 as the international governing body of the sport, with the chief goal, at that time, of putting triathlon on the Olympic program. For its part, the ITU does not sanction WTC races. However, USAT uses a combination of ITU and WTC rules to sanction WTC's branded events.

International Ultra Triathlon Association (IUTA) is the official governing body of Ultra triathlon which involves triathlon in longer distances than Ironman.  Olympic Triathlon Tickets are easily available at Sport Ticket Exchange. Hyde Park, London and Olympic Triathlon

Hyde Park is one of the largest parks in central London, United Kingdom, and one of the Royal Parks of London, famous for its Speakers' Corner.
The park is divided in two by the Serpentine. The park is contiguous with Kensington Gardens; although often still assumed to be part of Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens has been technically separate since 1728, when Queen Caroline made a division between the two. Hyde Park covers 142 hectares and Kensington Gardens covers 111 hectares, giving an overall area of 253 hectares, making the combined area larger than the Principality of Monaco, though smaller than New York City's Central Park. To the southeast, outside the park, is Hyde Park Corner. Although, during daylight, the two parks merge seamlessly into each other, Kensington Gardens closes at dusk but Hyde Park remains open throughout the year from 5 am until midnight.
Hyde Park is the largest of four parks which form a chain from the entrance of Kensington Palace through Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, via Hyde Park Corner and Green Park, past the main entrance to Buckingham Palace and then on through Saint James's Park to Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall.
Hyde Park has been the venue for some famous rock concerts, including the major location for the Live 8 string of benefit concerts. Queen played here in one of their most popular shows, in 1976. It is estimated that 150–200 thousand people turned up for the event. The record concert attendance is probably for the 1969 concert by the Rolling Stones. According to much of the press, the crowd then was estimated between 250,000 and 500,000.  Blur played here as part of their reunion. They released a live album recorded at the park called All the People: Blur Live at Hyde Park. Since 1996, the park has been the London venue for the Proms in the Park concerts, held on the last night of the BBC Proms.

For the 2012 London Olympics, the park will host the triathlon and the 10 km open water swimming events. The park is also planning on holding the 2012 Iron Man competition. It is a temporary venue that will be built in June 2012 and taken down following the 2012 Games. Olympic Triathlon Tickets are easily available at Sport Ticket Exchange. Running at Olympic Triathlon

The primary distinguishing feature of running in a triathlon is that it occurs after the athlete has already been exercising in two other disciplines for an extended period of time, so many muscles are already tired. The effect of switching from cycling to running can be profound; first-time triathletes are often astonished at their muscle weakness, maybe caused by lactate accumulation and the bizarre, sometimes painful sensation in their thighs a few hundred yards into the run, and discover that they run at a much slower pace than they are accustomed to in training. Triathletes train for this phenomenon through transition workouts known as "bricks": back to back workouts involving two disciplines, most commonly cycling and running.
Participants in triathlon often use the sport to improve or maintain their physical fitness. With each sport being an endurance event, training for a triathlon provides cardiovascular exercise benefits. Additionally, triathletes encounter fewer injuries than those who only use running as part of their exercise routine due to the incorporation of low impact swim and bike training.

Athletes who participate in endurance events spend many hours training for those events and this is true for triathlon as well. Injuries that are incurred from long hours of a single activity are not as common in triathlon as they are in single sport events. The cross-training effect that athletes achieve from training for one sport by doing a second activity applies to triathlon training. Additional activities that triathletes perform for cross-training benefits are yoga, pilates, and weight training. Olympic Triathlon Tickets are easily available at Sport Ticket Exchange.
